The last three months have been fairly dry up here in the Ozarks. Looking back my records I see that the only above average rainfall month was August, which was about 1.5 ches er the average. However, when you add in July and September our rainfall total for the three months was 1.5 inches below normal. September was the worst of the three months ith less than one inch falling here and the average being almost 3.2 inches. Sure do hope the jet stream changes course so we can get some more moisture up here, we don’t need yet another dry winter.

The Crooked Creek project, which is not quite completed yet. Involved the installation of two rock vanes, several locked logs and a cedar revetment. This was one of the first Stream Team stabilization projects in the Ozarks when it was originally installed about 15 years ago. The eroding bank is about 740 feet long and 14 feet high. It is located near Yellville about half way between the Fred Berry Educational Center and the Yellville City Park.

The final project was on Kings River near Stony Point. This project involved the placement of two rock vanes, two LFSTP’s and the filling of an overflow channel. The purpose of the upper vane is to deflect higher flow levels away from the rest of the project site. Immediately downstream of this structure is the first LFSTP. This structure was placed across the mouth of an overflow channel to act as a dam. Downstream of this LFSTP the overflow channel was filled with material from the gravel bar. This fill material was piled to the level of the top of the LFSTP and sloped downstream at about 40:1. This area will be densely planted with willow cuttings later this winter. The flat slope and willows will slow down flood waters once they overtop the LFSTP. The second vane is located at the bottom of this fill area. It is attached to the upstream end of the second LFSTP. This rock vanes primary purpose is to deflect flood waters away from the rest of the project site and to protect the upper end of the second LFSTP.
